The Victorian Era saw the rise of mass production in clothing and accessories manufacturing, making jewelry cheaper and easier for more people to acquire. Necklaces and cameos were very popular, but mostly in darker colors following Prince Albert's death, due Queen Victoria's extended mourning period.
After the turn of the century, chokers were popularized by Queen Victoria's daughter-in-law Alexandra, who wore would wear multiple tight strands of pearls to hide a scar. Eventually, ladies began to layer and stack their jewelry instead of just wearing one or two pieces.
